Advent Prayer
Amen.

434 O Little Town of Bethlehem
O little town of Bethlehem,
how still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
the silent stars go by;
yet in thy dark streets shineth
the everlasting Light;
the hopes and fears of all the years
are met in thee tonight.
For Christ is born of Mary,
and gathered all above,
while mortals sleep, the angels keep
their watch of wond’ring love.
O morning stars, together
proclaim the holy birth,
and praises sing to God the King,
and peace, goodwill on earth!
How silently, how silently
the wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
the blessings of his heaven.
No ear may hear his coming,
but in this world of sin,
where meek souls will receive him, still
the dear Christ enters in.
O Holy Child of Bethlehem,
descend to us, we pray;
cast out our sin and enter in;
be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
the great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Immanuel!
419 Silvery Star, Precious Star
Silvery star, precious star,
shining over Bethlehem,
guiding wise men from afar,
in the still night leading them.
Starlight and song all the night long,
heralds of morn; Jesus is born.
Beautiful song, wondrous song
kneeling shepherds wept to hear,
chanted by God’s holy throng,
singing peace and joy and cheer.
Baby Savior, born at night
in the ages long ago,
angels sang, and stars gave light
for thy humble home below.
Lo, we hear the song o’erhead!
Lo, we see the star arise!
Like the wise men we are led
in the still night unto Christ.
317 The Peace of Jesus Christ
The peace of Jesus Christ makes us whole,
gives us life, restores our souls,
brings us grace, sets us free. God’s liberty!
We open heart and hands, we hear the call
that no child on earth should fall.
Warfare cease! Justice for the lost and least.
No walls of hate shall stand, no words divide
as we journey side by side
making earth one sacred home.
At last! God’s sweet shalom.
The peace of Jesus Christ still alive
in each nation, home, and tribe.
God’s intent—world rebirth. All are of worth.
We shall pursue this peace and share our wealth,
feed the starved, restore lost health.
Dignity, love for all humanity.
Be brave, be strong, be bold! We are not frail.
Side by side, we shall not fail
to make earth one sacred home.
At last! God’s sweet shalom.
424 The First Noël
The first Noël the angel did say
was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
in fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Noël, Noël, Noël, Noël!
Born is the King of Israel!
They looked up and saw a star
shining in the east beyond them far,
and to the earth it gave great light,
and so it continued both day and night.
And by the light of that same star,
three wise men came from country far;
to seek for a king was their intent,
and to follow the star wherever it went.
This star drew nigh to the northwest,
over Bethlehem it took its rest,
and there it did both stop and stay
right over the place where Jesus lay.
Then entered in those wise men three;
full rev’rently upon the knee,
they offered there, in his presence,
their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
398 Hope Is a Light
Hope is a light,
hope is a light.
Hope is a light to show the way,
hope is a light to show the way.
Light the candle of hope,
light the candle of hope.
Peace is a prayer,
peace is a prayer.
Peace is a prayer that starts with me,
peace is a prayer that starts with me.
Light the candle of peace,
light the candle of peace.
Joy is a song,
joy is a song.
Joy is a song for all to sing,
joy is a song for all to sing.
Light the candle of joy,
light the candle of joy.
Love is a gift,
love is a gift.
Love is a gift our hearts can give,
love is a gift our hearts can give.
Light the candle of love,
light the candle of love.
Jesus is born,
Jesus is born.
Jesus is born in us today,
Jesus is born in us today:
Christ, the light of the world,
Christ, the light of the world.
404 Canticle of the Turning
My soul cries out with a joyful shout
that the God of my heart is great,
and my spirit sings of the wondrous things
that you bring to the ones who wait.
You fixed your sight on your servant’s plight,
and my weakness you did not spurn,
so from east to west shall my name be blest.
Could the world be about to turn?
My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near,
and the world is about to turn.
Though I am small, my God, my all,
you work great things in me,
and your mercy will last from the depths of the past
to the end of the age to be.
Your very name puts the proud to shame,
and to those who would for you yearn,
you will show your might, put the strong to flight,
for the world is about to turn.
From the halls of pow’r to the fortress tow’r,
not a stone will be left on stone.
Let the king beware for your justice tears
every tyrant from his throne.
The hungry poor shall weep no more,
for the food they can never earn;
there are tables spread, every mouth be fed,
for the world is about to turn.
Though the nations rage from age to age,
we remember who holds us fast:
God’s mercy must deliver us
from the conqueror’s crushing grasp.
This saving word that our forebears heard
is the promise which holds us bound,
till the spear and rod can be crushed by God,
who is turning the world around.
